Individual Tax Return Preparation

Accurate, audit-ready personal tax returns prepared by an attorney-led team. We find every deduction you qualify for and stand behind your return if the IRS ever asks questions.

Who We Help

We prepare federal Form 1040 returns, along with your state and city returns, for clients across Metro Detroit and nationwide.

  • W-2 employees and families, including dependents, childcare, and education expenses.
  • Self-employed, freelance, and gig workers with 1099-NEC or 1099-K income.
  • Retirees with Social Security, pensions, IRA and 401(k) distributions.
  • Investors and landlords with stock sales, crypto, K-1s, or rental property.
  • Anyone with a complicated year: a move, marriage, divorce, new business, home sale, or an inheritance.

What's Included With Your Return

Every individual return includes:

  • A review of your prior-year return to catch missed deductions or errors.
  • Federal, state, and city returns prepared together so they match.
  • Electronic filing and confirmation once your return is accepted.
  • Estimated tax guidance for next year if you owe or are self-employed.
  • IRS notice support. If a letter arrives about a return we prepared, a tax attorney is already on your side.

Forms, Schedules, Credits & Deductions

We handle every common form and schedule, including:

  • Schedule A: itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state and local taxes, charitable gifts, medical costs).
  • Schedule B: interest and dividends.
  • Schedule C and SE: self-employment income and self-employment tax.
  • Schedule D and Form 8949: stock, crypto, and other capital gains.
  • Schedule E: rental property, royalties, and K-1 income from partnerships and S corporations.
  • Form 1040-X: amended returns to fix prior-year mistakes.

Credits & Deductions We Look For

  • Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, and education credits.
  • Retirement contributions (IRA, SEP, Solo 401(k)) and Health Savings Accounts.
  • The higher state and local tax (SALT) deduction limit under the 2025 OBBBA law.
  • New OBBBA deductions for seniors, qualified tips, overtime pay, and car loan interest, subject to income limits.
  • Energy, dependent care, and other credits you may qualify for.

Self-Employed & 1099 Income

Self-employment brings bigger deductions and bigger risks. We make sure you pay what you owe and not a dollar more.

  • Schedule C income and expenses, organized so they hold up in an audit.
  • Self-employment tax and the deduction for half of it.
  • Home office, vehicle, phone, and equipment deductions.
  • Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction for eligible owners.
  • Quarterly estimated tax payments so you avoid underpayment penalties next year.
  • Entity advice, including when an LLC or S corporation election may save you money.

Behind on Filing or Got an IRS Letter?

If you have unfiled years or received an IRS notice, don't wait. Penalties and interest keep growing, and the IRS may file a Substitute for Return (SFR) for you without the deductions you're entitled to.

We pull your wage and income transcripts directly from the IRS, prepare every missing year, and respond to notices such as a CP2000 underreporting letter. If you owe once you're caught up, our tax resolution team can set up a payment plan or request penalty relief.

How It Works

  1. Free consultation. Call (888) 965-3829 or book online. We'll tell you exactly which documents to gather.
  2. Flat-fee quote. After reviewing your documents, you get a fixed price before any work begins.
  3. Preparation and review. We prepare your return and walk you through your refund or balance due.
  4. E-file and follow-up. We file electronically, confirm acceptance, and stay available if any notices arrive.

Individual Tax Return FAQs

What documents do I need for my individual tax return?

Bring your W-2s, 1099s, 1098 mortgage interest statement, last year's return, records of deductible expenses, and any IRS or state letters. Self-employed clients should also bring income and expense records. Missing something? We can request your transcripts from the IRS.

Do you prepare my state and city returns too?

Yes. We prepare your Michigan return, any Michigan city income tax return (such as Detroit), and returns for other states if you lived or worked elsewhere during the year.

I'm self-employed. Can you help me lower my taxes?

Yes. We make sure every legitimate business deduction is claimed, calculate your QBI deduction, and advise on quarterly estimates and whether an S corporation election could reduce your self-employment tax.

Can you fix a return someone else prepared?

Yes. We review prior returns and file amended returns (Form 1040-X) when a previous preparer missed deductions or made errors.

What if I haven't filed in several years?

We prepare all of your missing years at once using IRS transcripts, and if you owe once you're current, we help you resolve the balance.

Do I have to come to your office?

No. You can meet us at our Troy, Michigan office or work with us by phone and secure document upload from anywhere.
