State Tax Returns: Michigan & Multi-State

Michigan individual, city, multi-state, and sales tax returns prepared alongside your federal return, so everything matches and nothing gets missed.

Michigan Individual Income Tax (MI-1040)

Michigan taxes individual income at a flat rate, and your MI-1040 is generally due on the same date as your federal return. We prepare it together with your federal return so the numbers match.

  • MI-1040 resident, part-year, and nonresident returns.
  • Homestead Property Tax Credit (MI-1040CR) for eligible homeowners and renters.
  • Retirement and pension subtractions for eligible retirees.
  • Michigan estimated tax payments for self-employed and retired taxpayers.

Michigan City Income Taxes

Detroit and a number of other Michigan cities levy their own income tax on residents and on nonresidents who work in the city. Many taxpayers don't realize they owe until a notice arrives.

  • City of Detroit resident and nonresident returns.
  • Other Michigan cities with an income tax, such as Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, and Pontiac.
  • Credits for city tax paid to another city, where allowed.

Multi-State & Nonresident Returns

If you lived in one state and worked in another, moved during the year, or earn income from out-of-state property or businesses, you may need more than one state return.

  • Part-year resident returns when you move into or out of Michigan.
  • Nonresident returns for income earned in another state.
  • Credits for taxes paid to other states, so you aren't taxed twice on the same income.
  • Reciprocal agreements. Michigan has agreements with Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin that can change where you file.

Who Needs a Multi-State Return?

  • You moved to or from Michigan during the year.
  • You live in Michigan but work (or worked remotely for an employer) in another state.
  • You own rental property or a business in another state.
  • You received a K-1 from a partnership or S corporation doing business in other states.

Michigan Sales & Use Tax Returns

Michigan businesses that sell taxable goods collect 6% sales tax, and businesses that buy taxable items without paying Michigan tax may owe 6% use tax.

  • Form 5080 monthly or quarterly sales, use, and withholding returns, generally due the 20th of the following month.
  • Form 5081 annual sales, use, and withholding return, generally due February 28.
  • Filing through Michigan Treasury Online (MTO), on the schedule Treasury assigns to your business.
  • Use tax on out-of-state and online purchases for businesses and individuals.

State Tax Notices & Back Returns

Michigan Treasury letters, missing state returns, and sales tax audits need a fast, careful response. We handle:

  • Michigan Treasury notices and bills.
  • Unfiled state and city returns for prior years.
  • Sales and use tax audits and assessments.
  • Penalty and interest relief requests where you qualify.

State Tax Return FAQs

Do I have to file a Michigan return if I live here?

Most Michigan residents with income above the filing threshold must file an MI-1040. Even if you aren't required to, you may want to file to claim a refund or the Homestead Property Tax Credit.

I live in Michigan but work in Ohio. Where do I file?

Michigan and Ohio have a reciprocal agreement, so wages are generally taxed only by your home state. Other income can still require an Ohio return. We'll sort out exactly what you need.

Do I owe Detroit city income tax?

Detroit taxes residents on all of their income and nonresidents on income earned in the city. If you live or work in Detroit, you likely need to file a city return.

How often does my business file Michigan sales tax?

Michigan Treasury assigns a monthly, quarterly, or annual filing schedule based on your tax liability. Most businesses also file an annual reconciliation return (Form 5081).

Can you file state returns for other states?

Yes. We prepare part-year and nonresident returns for other states along with your Michigan and federal returns.

I got a letter from Michigan Treasury. What should I do?

Don't ignore it. Send us the letter and we'll review it, explain what it means, and respond on your behalf when appropriate.
