Celebrity Problems Boris "Boom Boom" Becker - Bankrupt. Big bummer

Boris Becker, who made over $25 million in prize money alone when he played tennis professionally, was declared bankrupt in a London court on Wednesday for failing to pay a debt since October 2015.

His lawyer was requesting one more month, as Becker was reportedly remortgaging his property in Majorca, which would have gotten him over $6 million.

The judge called the debt “historic,” and wasn’t swayed by his lawyer’s arguments, which included this, according to the Guardian:

“He is not a sophisticated individual when it comes to finances. I am asking for a real last chance for Mr. Becker to come good…It has just taken longer than anticipated,” said his advocate, John Briggs.

Becker defended himself on Twitter by saying he was surprised by the proceedings and that he has the means to repay the debt.

The 52-year-old from Germany won six Grand Slam singles titles, including Wimbledon in 1985 when he was just 17 years old.

He most recently coached the Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic for three years — the partnership ended late last year — and helped him win several Grand Slam titles.

Becker has had financial troubles before. In 2001, he owed over $7 million in back taxes in Germany. That same year, Becker and his wife Barbara divorced, which cost him a reported $10 million plus the couple’s $2 million home on Florida’s Fisher Island.
