# How to Choose a Tax Resolution Service: Attorney-Led vs. National Tax Relief Companies

The best tax resolution service for most people is the one where a licensed professional personally handles your case, quotes a clear total fee after reviewing your IRS transcripts, and recommends the relief option your finances actually support. For complex cases such as levies, liens, payroll tax debt, six-figure balances or years of unfiled returns, an attorney-led firm adds legal protections that non-attorney tax relief companies cannot offer.

If you search for tax relief, the first results are usually large national companies with big advertising budgets. They can be a good fit for some cases. But the way a firm is structured, not how large it is, determines who works on your case, what you pay, and how your IRS problem gets resolved. This guide compares the two main types of providers and gives you a checklist to evaluate any firm.

## The Two Main Types of Tax Resolution Providers

### National tax relief companies

National firms such as Optima Tax Relief, Community Tax, Larson Tax Relief, Tax Defense Network and Anthem Tax Services operate at scale. They typically use a sales team for the first call, then assign your case to enrolled agents, CPAs or case managers. Many use a two-phase model: an investigation fee to pull transcripts and review your finances, followed by a separate resolution fee.

**Where they fit:** straightforward cases, such as a simple installment agreement, where convenience and a large support team matter most.

### Attorney-led tax resolution firms

Attorney-led firms are run by a licensed tax attorney who handles or directly supervises the IRS work. The attorney you speak with at the start is usually the person who negotiates your resolution.

**Where they fit:** cases with legal risk or complexity, including active levies and liens, trust fund recovery penalties for business owners, large balances, Offers in Compromise, unfiled returns, audits and appeals.

## Attorney-Led vs. National Firms at a Glance

| What to compare | Typical national tax relief company | Typical attorney-led firm |
| --- | --- | --- |
| First conversation | Sales or intake representative | Often the attorney handling the case |
| Who works your case | Enrolled agents, CPAs or case managers, sometimes reassigned | A licensed tax attorney, with consistent contact |
| Attorney-client privilege | Not available with non-attorney representatives | Available |
| Pricing model | Often an investigation fee plus a separate resolution fee | Often a flat fee quoted after reviewing your case |
| Best suited for | Simple payment plans and routine notices | Levies, liens, payroll taxes, large balances, OIC, audits and appeals |

Individual firms vary, so use these as questions to ask rather than assumptions. Some national companies have attorneys on staff, and some small firms are not attorney-led.

## How to Compare Services by the Problem You Have

### Offer in Compromise

Ask the firm to explain your Reasonable Collection Potential before promising a settlement. No legitimate firm can tell you that you qualify without reviewing your income, expenses and assets. Learn more about the [IRS Offer in Compromise](https://www.wolftax.com/irs-offer-in-compromise).

### Payment plans for back taxes

If you owe $50,000 or less as an individual, you may qualify for a streamlined installment agreement that requires little paperwork. Ask whether you need a firm at all, and what the firm adds beyond what you could set up yourself. See [IRS installment agreements](https://www.wolftax.com/irs-installment-agreement).

### Tax liens and levies

Levies and liens are time-sensitive. Ask how quickly the firm can file a power of attorney, request a collection hold, or file a Collection Due Process appeal before a deadline passes. See [IRS tax levy help](https://www.wolftax.com/irs-tax-levy) and [tax lien help](https://www.wolftax.com/tax-lien).

### Wage garnishment

A wage levy continues every pay period until it is released. Ask what the firm will do in the first week, not just the first month.

### Audit defense

Audits can raise questions beyond the original issue. Representation by a tax attorney keeps your communications privileged if the audit uncovers something sensitive. See our [IRS tax audit guide](https://www.wolftax.com/irs-tax-audit-guide).

### Federal and state back taxes

If you owe both the IRS and your state, confirm the firm handles both, since state collection rules differ from federal ones.

## Questions to Ask Any Tax Resolution Service

1. Who, by name and credential, will handle my case?
2. Is that person a tax attorney, CPA or enrolled agent?
3. What is the total fee, and does it cover both the investigation and the resolution?
4. What happens, and what does it cost, if the IRS rejects the proposed resolution?
5. How often will I get updates, and who do I contact?
6. Which resolution options do you expect to fit my case, and why?

## Red Flags

- Guaranteed results or promises to settle for "pennies on the dollar" before reviewing your finances
- Pressure to sign or pay the same day
- Large upfront fees with no written scope of work
- No named, credentialed person responsible for your case
